Mass Data Backup and Storage Options – Large Data Backup Services

 Nowadays, there are more and larger files on the computer than ever before.  The old idea of mass storage for mainframe or servers only is fast becoming a myth.

 With hard disks becoming cheaper, this is now the media of choice for data storage and backup.  Some tape backup solutions use hard disks for virtual tape libraries prior to writing the data to tape. 

 For home use, external hard disks can serve for both additional storage and for backup purposes.  External hard drives can also be daisy-chained to store more data as needed.  For large business needs, a hot backup composed of large disk arrays may be the solution.

 Whereas formerly, ZIP disks and Iomega drives were once very popular, these have been supplanted in popularity by DVD disks.  DVD disks are very cheap and are good for long-term archiving.  DVD burners are also common place for desktops and notebooks and very convenient for storing personal files.

 For large data center operations, tape drives, tape libraries and jukeboxes remain part of the storage solution.  There are various strategies for tape media which include virtual tape libraries stored in hard disk arrays which make for very fast tape backup for large data.

 Bottom line is, to keep your data safe there are now alternatives to a floppy disk.  With hard disks getting cheaper, a second hard disk for data storage is a good idea.  Burning data to CD-ROM and DVD is best for long-term data storage. 

 Whereas, for large data, a tape drive offers a fast media to backup data.
