More Space for More Media
With an additional 500 GB of disk space, the Hard Disk can store up to 2 million photos, 9,250 hours of music, or 750 hours of video. Instead of having all this data stored on an internal drive on your desktop computer that can't be went around, imagine being able to carry your entire digital media collection with you on your travels. You can also use the drive to back up your computer files for extra security.

Quick Routine and Exceptional Compatibility

The drive is pre-formatted for use across Windows and Macs, doesn't demand any additional drivers, and is ready to go seconds after being removed from the box. The drive features a rotational speed of 7200 RPM and has a cache of at least 8 MB, as long as routine that won't keep you coming up for your files to backup or your media to play.

A compact, fanless design allows for silent operation. View larger.

Free One-Year Unlimited Backup Subsidy
With the buy of this LaCie Hard Disk, you will also hear a full year of LaCie's Online Backup subsidy. With this subsidy, the data that you store on your computer will be encrypted twice and uploaded to the offsite data center where they will remain encrypted, maintaining your privacy.

When you sign up for the subsidy, software is added to your computer that looks for new and altered files to update. The subsidy is completely automated and only backs up new and modified files when your computer is idle, so you don't have to do a thing, and your computer's routine will never be affected.

This subsidy lets you upload an unlimited amount of photos, music, video, and documents for a full year. After that you can take up again with the subsidy for a low monthly fee. This is LaCie's way of ensuring that should anything happen to your Hard Disk -- should it get stolen or smashed, for instance -- your invaluable data will remain completely confined and accessible.

I attached this 1-TB USB outdoor drive to my 2.8 ghtz IMac. The setup was a snap, but the included utilities wanted to take the whole drive as a single partition. I used the Mac's disk utilities, and made two partitions. This way, one partition can now be used for Time Machine (which by the way, will keep backing up until the disk is full, then starts deleting the oldest files), and another partition that is used to back up my Linux server.

The rest of the setup was quick. The Mac found the drive quickly, and so did Time Machine. The Time Machine software questioned me which partition I wanted to use, and once that was chose on, Time Machine took off, and has been backing up ever since. How simple is that?

Also, most of the specs I read on this drive show a cache of 16 mb, but the drive as delivered, much to my pleasant surprise, has a cache of 32 mb. Even with the USB tie (I reckon firewire, which is unfilled on some other La Cie drives, is about 15% quicker), I found the file transfer time more than conventional. I have run video from the drive with no issues. Also, I often transfer rather large photo files, and visual images to and from the drive, and again no issues.

All that being said, for the money, the drive is hard to beat.
Gorgeous & solid design

This was bought as outdoor backup - it's silent and lovely. The blue LED reflects off the go up (desktop) so you know when it's in use. Simple to use backup software included, but not robust enough for a power user or tech-geek (use cobian!).

The USB cable is kinda small, about 8", so if you're not plotting on placing this directly next to or on the box you're backing up plot to buy or use a different USB cable.
Fantastic Hard Drive

Very sleek design. Be aware this model is usb only, if you want firewire there is a different model, same design. I only needed usb so i am quite pleased.
Fantastic Consumer Subsidy

Reviewer: D. Yadlosky,
I bought one of these about 9mo ago. Worked fantastic and was pleased with it. About 3 months ago I was in a flood (3ft of water right through the house). When we realized what was experience I quickly unplugged the hard drive (which I used for back ups) and my husband and I got out. Can't be more pleased that I got the drive and was backing up my PC. There was no chance to carry the whole PC out.

But to top it off I had left the cords (power and to PC) behind as they were already submerged. I couldn't figure out the assess power cord to buy. La Cie's consumer subsidy (by e-mail) was Fantastic! and promptly sent me out a new cord. I'll buy from them for my drive needs in the future just based on their fantastic subsidy. With all the things we had going on it was nice for one thing to go right.
cool-looking piece of gear

Prearranged this, it arrived quickly. Worked right out of the box and looks cool sitting on my desk. Transfer speeds are limited by USB 2.0, so if you want quicker data transfer buy the version that has a touch like 4 more tie options. I'm cheap, so I went for the budget version of this drive. It's suited me impeccably so far. I'd beyond doubt urge.
